PROOF OF PERFORMANCE Objective The residents of Joplin, MO were hurting and needed a temporary hospital quickly. Much of the town had just been devastated after taking a direct hit from a massive tornado. More than 150 residents lost their lives, and St. John’s Regional Medical Center was closed after sustaining major damage. Joplin needed an interim facility that could provide acute care within months, not the three-to-four years it would take to design and build a larger replacement for St. John’s. Solution The plan was aggressive. It called for the construction of a two-story, 150,000 square-foot modular hospital to be completed and open to receive patients in less than nine months. Xcel Mechanical was hired to design and build the new facility’s HVAC system per ASHRAE hospital codes. Working within those requirements, our engineers put forward a lean con- struction ductwork design that lessened the client’s total overall equipment and labor costs. Our construction team delivered the solution on time and on budget.
