Project Update: UCLA Luskin Conference Center Achieves LEED Platinum Certification

WESTWOOD, CA — Xcel Mechanical delivered the gleaming project to this prestigious client 11 months ago. And with one month remaining in the warranty period, and project close-out with GC Partner McCarthy Building Companies on the horizon, the good news came at a great time.

The UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center has just been recognized for its commitment to sustainability by achieving LEED Platinum certification— California’s second LEED Platinum certified building of its kind, and the sixth newly constructed venue of its kind in the nation to be certified LEED Platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The 295,000-square-foot conference center opened to the public in August 2016. It has 254 guest rooms for overnight accommodations. It was recognized for overall sustainability, indoor environmental quality, innovation in design and energy, and overall atmosphere.

The conference center is one of more than 30 LEED certified buildings at UCLA, including nine that hold Platinum certification.

Xcel Mechanical’s scope was to provide HVAC Design Assist and Construction services, and deliver an energy efficient floor-to-floor, room-to-room HVAC solution.

Our Project Management Team took steps during the design, construction and commissioning phases that helped the project hit its sustainability objectives.

Our team covered all the ends of the new building’s ductwork following installation, then took and submitted documentation photos of the work. Our team routinely changed out filters in the building while paying close attention to the ratio of outdoor air coming in, and indoor air quality overall.

“LEED Platinum is a big deal. We knew how important it was to our client, so our priority was to deliver a sustainable solution that would help them hit their objective,” said Juan Zelada, Xcel Mechanical project manager. “Now, it’s official. LEED Platinum is a win for everyone involved in this project – and beyond.”
